After a long haitus . . . comes an amazing hour of television! It’s been so long and I think the wait has certainly paid off! The season premiere gave me everything that I expected: romance, comedy, mystery, action, etc. The writers have certainly upped their game and I do not think that they will fail us in delivering one of the beast seasons in the show’s run. It seems like each season, the cast and crew return better and stronger. And it definitely shows. Especially with this episode, the pacing is perfect, the story is well balanced, the characters each have a significant arc of their own, and the group chemistry is spot-on. They managed to deliver an entertaining and suspenseful episode while keeping the characters and their respective dilemmas rich. One of the things that I enjoy about the show is that it always manages to keep itself grounded in reality. By making the characters more dimensional, it becomes less of a fantasy/supernatural/science fiction show and more of a drama where characters are constantly caused to ask questions about themselves and their futures.
One of the things that I appreciated about the writing was that everyone got on the same page pretty quickly, enabling us to move forward with the story. Yes, there were sides taken and some disagreements, but our characters have grown. Last season, it took nearly half a season for Vincent and Catherine to finally agree on what to do and how to do. With that being said, we do hear the same argument from last year: do we respond to the call of action or do we ignore it and move on with our lives? This time around, we hear those same echoes but the way our characters handle it is different. And it is refreshing, to say the least. It emphasizes that our team has grown a lot from last year and they are quick to come to a solution.
I absolutely loved Heather in this episode! She provides comic relief and a lightness to the show that certainly makes her a vibrant element in the show. And I do like that she becomes much more than just a tag-along sister. She actually becomes an integral part of the team as she had begun to demonstrate last season. I almost forgot that she does PR, so when JT asked her to help with the blogger situation, it made total sense. And here, we get to see Heather’s skills and abilities being put to use. Of course, the plan fails but we did get a step further into the case. And it was enough to make the rest of the team take action. Hooray Heather! In reward for your valuable contribution – you get a hot EMT!
The cast is incredible with the comedy. The airport scene, Heather being caught, JT and Heather breaking in, etc. Let me just say there were several times where I was giggling to myself. LOL.
What’s particularly interesting with regards to the sister relationship between Catherine and Heather, is that Catherine has adopted more of a motherly-protective role over Heather. It makes sense being that she is the older sister. But we do see Catherine scold Heather a bit for her decision to sleep with a man she knew for a day in her bed. I would be pissed too. But Catherine warns Heather that a relationship cannot happen and that she has to move out because of the current situation. It won’t be long before Heather realizes that her personal life will be affected immensely. I must add that although Vincent didn’t say anything to Heather, he did give Kyle a look of warning. It was nice to see him act like a protective older brother to Heather too.
Throughout most of the episode, Tess purposely avoided anything and everything to do with beasts – and with reason. But she also was very protective of JT, not letting him get involved. But JT expresses his need and his obligation to help his friend. Tess realizes that she can’t keep keeping him safe and the two have a good conversation in the end. Although Vincent is the ‘MVP’ of the team, let’s not forget that everyone is a hero in their own way as well.
Vincent and Catherine’s relationship is just perfection. They have their romantic moments but when it’s time to kick ass – they kick ass!! When the bounty hunter was about ready to skin Catherine, she surprised us all when she knocked the guy out, wriggled free of the rope around her wrists, played hide and seek, and dodged a bullet. I had a huge smile on my face during this whole sequence. It reminds us that Catherine is perfectly capable of saving herself and she doesn’t need Vincent to save her all the time. Yes, Vincent does come in at the end and kill the guy, but it’s done in a way that doesn’t make her look weak or helpless. We appreciate that. We also appreciate that the ‘humanity’ issue wasn’t brought up again.
I know it’s been two months (according to the show) that Vincent has last ‘beasted out’ but the show makes it clear that it’s always a struggle for Vincent to make the transition. Which is why I was confused that Vincent ‘lost’ Catherine. Also, why does Vincent drive around when he can just blur anywhere much faster?
In conclusion, the blogger is dead, the bounty hunter is dead, but we discover that someone wants Vincent for $5 million. With the additional threat of exposure, it seems things will get complicated – once again.
I do like that we end things on the rooftop with Vincent being romantic and Catherine being French – cleverly sneaking in the title of the episode. For better or for worse, they now have to face things together – as husband and wife. For now, things are good but it won’t be long before all hell breaks loose. Not much to predict here, but looking forward to what the rest of the season may bring us!! Glad to be back!
